One, Just One Question, For My Republican Brethren…

I have a single question for Trump voters.

Do you agree with his decision to hire a white supremacist for the top administrative position in the White House?

If you do, then there is little to discuss. We’ve met an impasse in our discourse.

If you do not, do you intend to do anything about it?

There is, I’m told, a flaw in my argument, namely that Steve Bannon has never personally expressed white supremacist views.

That’s almost true. Certainly his wife testified in court that he refused to let his kids go to schools with too many Jewish kids, or, as he put it “whiny Jewish brats”. But that was a divorce proceeding, and we’re obligated to take what either side says about the other with a grain of salt.

So let’s look at Bannon.

When he became the executive chairman of Breitbart News, Breitbart was already on the fringe right. He pushed it further to the right, where they began publishing stories like:

  • Why Equality and Diversity Departments Should Only Hire Rich, Straight White Men
  • Would you Rather Your Child Had Feminism or Cancer?
  • There’s No Hiring Bias Against Women in Tech, They Just Suck at Interviews
  • The Solution to Online ‘Harassment’ is Simple: Women Should Log Off
  • Attack of the Lying Breastapo Feminazis

This is not “The Onion”. These aren’t jokes.

If you still think he’s not a white supremacist, fine, but the KKK disagrees with you. They have lauded the appointment. Former KKK Imperial Wizard David Duke called it “Excellent,” saying “[I] think that anyone that helps complete the program and the policies that President-elect Trump has developed during the campaign is a very good thing, obviously. So it’s good to see that he’s sticking to the issues and the ideas that he proposed as a candidate. Now he’s president-elect and he’s sticking to it and he’s reaffirming those issues… You have an individual, Mr. Bannon, who’s basically creating the ideological aspects of where we’re going.”

That is the former head of the KKK in glowing support of one of the most important White House appointments yet, and it’s not because he likes the layout of the Breitbart webpage.

And what’s even more scary is, this isn’t an accident. It’s not like Mr. Trump didn’t know these things when he hired Bannon. Steve Bannon was first hired on August 17th to co-direct the Trump campaign with Kellyanne Conway (who, while being the public face, was only co-director). Breitbart’s stories and reputation had been well established, and if Trump had somehow been ignorant of them, he learned about it when the lame stream media exploded the next day. Even if Trump fires Bannon, under pressure from the Politically Correct Gestapo, what does it say that this is the man he wants—both running the campaign, and the White House?

There’s no gray area here, it’s a binary issue. You can’t be “almost pregnant”, and you can’t be “kind of” against this. You either support it, or not. If you do, you are in the company of white nationalists and Klansmen (and if you’re okay with that, it says more about you than those you oppose). If you are against it… What does this mean about Trump himself, and what do you intend to do about it?

Being moral isn’t just about saying “I’m not a racist”—it’s about standing up and opposing racism. The first is easy, but it’s meaningless without the second.

This is unprecedented, and has many people terrified (and rightly so, if you’re a minority). This man must be opposed, unrelentingly, or you tacitly condone him.

So let me ask again… do you support Trump’s decision to hire a white supremacist for the top administrative position in the White House?

It’s easy to say you’re a good person, but values aren’t what you say–they’re what you do, and not just when life is easy, but when times get tough, too. If you don’t believe we should be putting white supremacists in positions of power, will you stand up and oppose it? Will you share this, will you talk to your friends, will you make your voice heard?

Thank you.

Well written … good question…

Hmmm. . Good question but racism is rampet in America & both parties. It
Feel that Americans don’t have a choice to vote for somebody not racist. Systemic Racism in the democrat party. Obama did more to racially devide America than any other Pres.

Becky Perkins

And now the backlash. In Libertarian but lean conservative. In not good with it, but couldn’t do anything about the racism in the Democrat party & won’t be able to do anything with Republican party.

You perceive racism in both parties, but chose the evil one to represent your values?

Becky Perkins

I don’t perceive. If u can’t see then your blind. Obama is evil & unconstitutional. Hilary, well NOBODY wanted her. Trump was left.

Diana Hinton

Becky Perkins omg. 2 million more people wanted Hillary over Trumpski. What is your rationale for saying Obama is evil other than your opinion? You are the blind one voting for someone who may sell us out to the Russians and who is hiring white nationalists and Jew haters Everything Trumpski’s promised is unconstitutional. Duh

Becky Perkins

Sell us out? Obama can’t even say Terrorist! My rationale fir beginners are the socialist healthcare act we are FORCED into. This is America, we should nit be forced to take some crap & then get fined for not having it. Racial division, poor leadership. I could go on.

And if u don’t understand the electoral vote this conversation can’t advance. Also he win 3084 counties out of a total of 3141 counties in America. Talk facts. Cuz some poll said Hilary got the popular vote

Becky Perkins

I see polls that say Trump did. I don’t care about Trump. This guy asked about racism. I said it runs rampet in both parties. Who cares about popular vote or me pointing out the electoral vote.

Becky Perkins

Obama & Trump are both racist so I can’t defend either

Republicans started calling President Obama and his family all the horrible, racist names in the book even before he took office. They sought – and many still do – to discredit his legitimacy as a citizen. And then they lay the blame him for the racial hatred THEY SHOWED AGAINST HIM at his feet. Unbelievable.

Okay, so there’s wiggle room with hiring a white supremacist to co the most powerful administrative position in the white house. Can you elucidate?

J Alex Wheeler

If you apply an absolutist position to any human behavior, you quickly run into issues. For instance, is the person in question Adolph Hitler, or Archie Bunker? You could posit that given the chance Archie Bunker would have become Hitler, but that is supposition. By presenting it as black or white, not only are you saying that there are no shades of lesser or greater evil, you are implying that there is an absolute ideal for being a non-supremacist. Whatever that might look like… Can you honestly say that there isn’t anyone who could be worse than Bannon? All of… Read more »

Yes, there are people who could be worse than Bannon. That’s not an excuse for supporting him. Yes, my comments are more absolutest than I am usually comfortable with, but… wow. I never said there aren’t Republicans opposing this. I said either you oppose it or you don’t. He’s a racist, and if you want to debate that point, lets do that. But once that’s established (and I think I did a decent job), either you support him or not. I don’t think the fact that, well, he’s not Adolph Hitler, adds nuance to this. That’s a pretty low bar… Read more »

It is a low bar. If you subscribe to the idea that all politicians are rascals and crooks, and political appointees doubly so, then a low bar is hard to avoid. And therein lies the issue with absolutism. Sorry, a binary choice. I don’t support him, and I don’t oppose him. The disconnect in communication probably comes from an inability to understand that, to me and probably a significant portion of other people, he actually does appear to be a lesser evil. I won’t try to convince you of the reality of such a claim, because a) it is based… Read more »

Hehehe… Mr. Wheeler, I’m very, very glad you landed on this page. Insightful, respectful, and with a healthy dose of self awareness and reflection. God, this world would be a better place if we had more of that. You no doubt know that “all evil needs in order to thrive is for good men to do nothing”, and I am of the opinion that the evil here rises to that level, that to not oppose his views is to endorse them (Qui Tacet Consentire Videtur—“Silence Implies Consent”). But you’ve brought up excellent points—well thought out ones. If I was to… Read more »

I understand. If is of any comfort, all I can say is that reserving judgement while preparing to act is not quite the same as doing nothing. Being a white male (and southern as an added bonus), I realize that I and my children, and my children’s children’s children will have to bear judgement (rightly or wrongly) for the actions taken by the incoming administration. I can assure you that the prospect fills me with trepidation also. But a rush to judgement is, or should be, contrary to the very concept of “conservative”. Counseling patience is a poor substitute for… Read more »

I didn’t have a vote in who he chose for this position. My departure from the left started with clock kid. I was called racist for being skeptical. let that sink in. Dawkins got slaughtered as well. That kid baited his school into getting arrested and counted on his ability to exploit the race card and cashing in . It worked. What I see is islamophilia and I found out what the term bleeding heart liberal meant. I’m not hanging with it. I saw first hand in the fight clubs the atheists bashing xtians and giving muslims a free pass.… Read more »

And I agree very much with your point on racism. I do my best not to call people racist – and if I were to rewrite this piece, I would actually use the phrase “white nationalist”. Having been called unpatriotic – the conservatives version of suppression by language… Having been shouted down for “wanting to give therapy to the terrorists” – by doing exactly what our commanders on the ground now say we need to do – I know exactly what you’re talking about. Words like “racist” and “patriotic” have only one purpose – to shut down dialog. I do… Read more »

I know the typical attention span is about five minutes and this is too long.

No doubt I can be seen as ranting and tweaked

I’d refer who ever is reading my comments to those who have more savvy .

Trump won because of immigration and liberal PC gone crazy . Imo…I just can’t believe so many agreed with me that we won.

So again…don’t like a choice who said whiney Jews ? Suck it up. And get a grip on why you lost which will never happen

And as far as moving to Canada goes.. You’d be in court for having a bigoted opinion. I only wish more liberals would go there starting with Rosie and Whoopie. I can appreciate how liberals think conservatives are insane. I totally get it. We have the YECs and the alt right Nazis. I am an atheist and a physics groupie on team stupid. This was a huge sacrifice for me on a few issues. But when it comes to this new age multivulturalism and micro aggression and BLM and islamophilia… I’m hanging with Trump. I’m not alone as a conservative… Read more »

Liberals have demonized our sources. Pretty soon we’ll just be al lfake news. That’s a tactic that works very well for the religious to keep them isolated and away from being able to be objective by understanding both sides of an argument

and I think its time for me to shut up now for a bit.

What do I think of Trumps choice?

Olivia Mark

SUCK IT UP. Just like the conservatives have been doing with a bunch of islamophiles and Hillary as secretary of state. Benghazi should have had her in prison alone .

I didn’t shut up, huh

I’m an atheist because of fb that dumped god in jan 2015, I hate atheists and its not because I hate myself.. its because I hate narcissists

I just went from hating them to despising the liberal party.

and that’s it. I was a liberal because of science and science alone. Now.. well.. that should be evident.

My parting words for today’s Trump protestors ….

My generation protested the Viet Nam war, got shot by the national guard, were called bums by the president and we got our president to resign.

Top that, punks
